Poverty Walk
The third annual Poverty Awareness Walk kicked off with a beautiful sunny sky overhead, over 60 volunteers on site, and just over 300 registered walkers. The event was full of passion for people who live in poverty and work hard everyday to achieve success.
Annually District 7 Human Resources Development Council hosts the "Poverty Awareness Walk" to shine the spotlight on the success stories in our area and bring awareness to our community as we raise the visibility of community action programs. This year three participants shared their stories of success as they have reached new goals in their lives through the assistance offered at District 7 HRDC. Nikole is now a new homeowner and business owner as she received assistance for a new manufactured home to replace her old energy consumptive home. Ivaleen is on her way to a new career through the employment and training programs and can now see her dream of being a pharmacy tech as a reality. And Rose has become a very successful hairdresser, getting her start in our Youth Employment Program. Special thanks and congratulations to all of our participants!
Many walkers collected sponsorships for their walk. The walkers from Team Roscoe Steel turned in over $950 sponsored dollars and came out on top winning the 1st and 2nd place prizes. The third place prize went to a walker from the Adult Learning Center! A total of over $1530 was brought in by registered walkers. Funds raised will go towards new program development.
Local superstars were on tap including our guest emcee, Marc Moraniec, weatherman for KTVQ; Boy Scout Troop 23 preforming the presentation of the flags; the Billings Outlaw football team who prepared and served lunch, as well as entertaining the participants with autographs. Our own Tammy Luhman captivated the crowd as she presented herself as a very joyful clown. In addition, the band "Plum Blue" provided a great mix of live music to add to the festive feeling in helping us celebrate the day!
